News from the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC)

All scientific conservationists, taxonomists, museum professionals, and biodiversity researchers are invited to contribute their expertise and perspectives to the development of the IUCN SSC Position Statement on the vital role of Natural History Museums, Herbaria, and Scientific Collections in Biodiversity Conservation. Please join us in shaping this important guidance through our online public consultation from June 18th to July 16th, 2025. 

From May 26 - 29, the 2025 SSC Steering Committee Meeting was held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. SSC Steering Committee and SSC Chair’s Office staff reported highlights of the latest activities developed for species conservation, and shared the next steps toward the World Conservation Congress. 

The SSC Chair’s Office is profoundly grateful for the support and warmth attention provided by the Center for Species Survival - Parque Das Aves, who kindly co-hosted this meeting, as well as Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation for sharing technical information to participants about key drivers of the Iguaçu National Park management, and facilitate participants visit the Iguaçu Falls.

SSC Deputy Chair Rima Jabado, Marine Conservation Committee Chair Amanda Vincent, and Marine Conservation Committee Coordinator Coralie Palmer represented SSC as members of the IUCN Delegation to the Third United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France. Several other SSC members also attended both UNOC3 and the One Ocean Science Congress including Giuseppe Notarbartolo Di Sciara, and David Obura. Key contributions included the launch of the Global Call to Halt the Extinction of Sharks and Rays, and presentations and side events on Important Shark and Ray Areas, Important Marine Mammal Areas, and non-selective fisheries.
