Alexandria Public Schools expands local food sourcing

The Alexandria Public Schools system in Minnesota increased local food purchases by 54% during the 2024-25 school year, according to Janeen Peterson, director of food and nutrition services. The initiative included a variety of products and was supported by installing a cooler for easier farmer deliveries.

School Update
The Concord School District in New Hampshire is facing more than $100,000 in lunch debt for the 2024-2025 school year, a significant increase from the pre-pandemic range of $7,000 to $15,000. The school board is working to pay off the debt by July and is developing a plan to address the issue next year, emphasizing the importance of ensuring every student receives a meal.

Registered dietitian nutritionist Elizabeth Shaw highlights five fruits that offer more protein than typical fruits -- guava, jackfruit, blackberries, avocado and pomegranate. While fruits are not a primary protein source, they contribute to daily protein intake and offer additional nutrients like fiber and antioxidants. "Protein and fiber are a powerful combo to help stave off hunger while providing essential nutrients your body requires," says RDN Lauren Harris-Pincus. They suggest pairing these fruits with other protein-providing foods to enhance their nutritional benefits.

Leaders may be tempted to judge others harshly in stressful situations, but true leadership requires assuming positive intent and practicing empathy even when it's difficult, management consultant Marc Cugnon writes. Leaders who view colleagues as adversaries can undermine morale and collaboration, while those who support rather than blame can help colleagues feel valued and trusted, leading to better personal and productivity outcomes, Cugnon notes.
