Women with mental illness vulnerable to domestic violence

A study in The Lancet Regional Health -- Europe found that 26% of women under mental health care who died by suicide had experienced domestic violence. Women who had experienced domestic violence had higher rates of PTSD, self-harm and substance misuse, and were more likely to have faced financial and housing challenges.

The National Lipid Association has issued guidance emphasizing the importance of managing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol to reduce risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The guidance highlights the need for timely monitoring and both lifestyle and pharmacological interventions, noting that management of LDL-C in patients with ASCVD often falls short of guideline-directed objectives.

A study in the journal Diabetic Medicine found that children who had COVID-19 were more than twice as likely to develop Type 1 diabetes within six months compared with those who were not infected. The study, which reviewed records of more than 1 million hospitalized children in England, found that 475 developed Type 1 diabetes after having COVID-19, at a rate of 90.5 per 100,000 person-years.

A study presented at the American Headache Society Annual Meeting shows that middle-aged men with migraines have a 3.7 times higher risk of ischemic stroke compared to those without migraines, and this risk is not observed in women or older men. The study emphasizes the need to consider migraine as a significant stroke risk factor in this demographic.

Mindfulness, tai chi linked with improved mood in cancer survivors

A study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that both mindfulness-based cancer recovery and tai chi/qigong significantly improved mood in cancer survivors. The research, involving 587 participants, showed that mindfulness practices were particularly effective in reducing anger and tension, while tai chi was more effective in decreasing depression and increasing vigor.

The American Heart Association's PREVENT risk calculator effectively assessed cardiovascular risk among an ethnically diverse population of 361,778 adults without diagnosed cardiovascular disease but with at least some baseline points. The risk equations performed well across Asian and Hispanic subgroups and performed better than pooled cohort equations for predicting atherosclerotic CVD across racial and ethnic groups, researchers reported in JAMA Cardiology.

The use of GLP-1 receptor agonists among pediatric patients with type 2 diabetes increased from 12.3% to 60.9% from 2019 to 2024 in a population of 696 patients, according to a study presented at the American Diabetes Association's 85th Scientific Sessions. The retrospective study tracked trends in obesity, A1C and medication use, and researchers noted the rise in GLP-1 use reflects "evolving practices and prioritization of high-risk subgroups."

A study in JAMA Network Open found racial and insurance disparities in access to buprenorphine for opioid use disorder despite increased efforts to improve access to medications. Black and Hispanic patients were less likely than white patients to receive buprenorphine, while those with Medicaid or Medicare Advantage were more likely to receive the medication compared with those with commercial insurance.

The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended vaccination against for everyone older than 6 months but recommended against use of flu vaccines with the preservative thimerosal. Most vaccines use little to none of the preservative, and the FDA and CDC have said low doses have not been shown to cause harm aside from the possibility of redness and swelling.
