Middle-school science project makes a difference

The Clean Boats, Clean Waters program began as a student-led science project in Wisconsin when a team of middle-schoolers identified aquatic invasive species as a pressing local issue. With encouragement from their teachers, these students designed a community-focused solution that ultimately grew into a statewide initiative.

Teen combines love for science, animals to help community

For her Girl Scout Silver Award, Anneliese Hsiao crocheted blankets for dogs that had only towels in their kennels at the Humane Society of Broward County, Fla., where Hsiao volunteers. For her Gold Award, the 16-year-old Hsiao, who is on a pre-med track in school, combined her passion for animals and science in a book about pet safety that covers heat, wildlife, plants and natural disasters.
