Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Updates for 2025-26 School Year

At their May 8 meeting, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the SR&R, including its cell phone policy. Other SR&R updates include added clarity and/or procedures around topics such as discipline data, parent notifications, hate speech, and integrated discipline training. The full list of changes is available on Boarddocs.

Cell Phone Policy Update for High Schools

Beginning in August, high school students can only use their cell phones and other personal devices (AirPods, smart watches, etc.) during lunch and before or after school. This is a change from FCPS’ current cell phone policy, which allows high schoolers to use devices during passing periods. Next school year, students must keep devices off and away during classroom time and during passing periods between classes.

Read more about the Cell Phone Policy.

Summer Reading- Strongly Encouraged

This summer, all Oakton students are encouraged to find a book that they enjoy reading. Here is a list of age appropriate books from the American Library Association for inspiration, but students may choose any book that fits their interests. Here are some ways that you can enjoy your book over the summer:

  • Read by the pool or at the beach
  • Discuss a book with your friends in a book club
  • Read on a plane or in the car to pass the time
  • Enjoy an audiobook

When we return to the school in August, we look forward to discussing these books and their connection to Oakton’s core values of community, integrity and respect in both Cougar Connect and English classes.
