Welcome back to Your Midday Sun where the Maple Leafs world may be a Mitch Marner-less one but as far as Steve Simmons is concerned, Toronto hasn't lost anything, at least when it comes to playoff time.
Yes, Marner has been great in the regular season, and a top-five right winger in the league, but while he has helped get the Leafs to the playoffs, he has struggled to get the team to advance in the post-season. In nine years, he's been good enough to get the team there, but terrible once there. Is there any reason to believe the Leafs could ever have won a Stanley Cup with Marner?

Do you know what was more beautiful than the Canada Day ceremony at Rogers Centre on Tuesday, where the vast majority of the sold-out crowd were clad in red to watch the Blue Jays take on the Yankees?
The way the Jays won, with the cherry on top being the George Springer fireworks that led his team to a rollicking 12-5 trouncing — and sent a message to the Yanks. Rob Longley has the glorious details. ALSO:
• An iconic sign that for decades has greeted beachgoers upon arrival to Sauble Beach on the Lake Huron shoreline was switched up on Canada Day, and now reads "Welcome to Saugeen Beach."
• Six people were arrested following an armed home invasion near Huntsville on Canada Day which also sparked the closure of Hwy. 11, south of Gravenhurst.
• A 31-year-old Brampton man has been charged with several firearms offences following a traffic stop in Mississauga last week.
• A 17-year-old Kitchener boy has been charged while others are outstanding following a fireworks robbery ahead of Canada Day.
• Ontario’s police watchdog says it has found no reasonable grounds to believe an OPP officer committed a crime when he fatally shot a 57-year-old man at a Kenora park last year.
• Some concertgoers who trekked to the new Rogers Stadium on Sunday evening are calling for changes following complaints about washrooms, water access and crowds. Spiro Papuckoski has the story. |
Canadians took to parks and civic squares across the country to show unity on Canada Day amid American threats, economic uncertainty and western alienation. Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about "the Canadian way" during festivities in Ottawa, where Prince Edward, who was also on hand, praised the celebrations of our "strong and free" nation.
ALSO:
• The Canada Revenue Agency says taxpayers who already paid the now-defunct digital services tax will have to wait for Ottawa to pass new legislation before they can get their refund. • A report by the Department of Natural Resources says two 2018 federal climate programs that promised new jobs and lower emissions failed to provide either, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
• Hundreds of wildfires are currently raging across Canada, including dozens in British Columbia and Alberta, while the Yukon government has lifted an evacuation alert for the area surrounding Ethel Lake. • Elon Musk has threatened to start a third major political party in the U.S., which has been met with widespread skepticism as critics pointed to numerous failed bids over decades to disrupt America’s two-party system.
• The Dalai Lama said the centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist institution will continue after his death, though the decision is expected to irk China, which has repeatedly said that it alone has the authority to approve the next reincarnated leader. |
Sun columnist Lorne Gunter looks at all the things that went wrong when the Liberals tucked their tails between their legs and walked back the digital services tax. |

With Mitch Marner gone, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving's priority — and the area that needs the most focus — is fixing the top six of the lineup. But the new Leafs — centre Nicolas Roy, forward Michael Pezzetta and winger Matias Maccelli — combined with the trading of Marner, doesn’t add up to the DNA change that Treliving is seeking. More from Terry Koshan. |
Rapper and hip-hop producer Sean "Diddy" Combs may have skated on sex trafficking and racketeering charges, but he still faces a decade behind bars on the prostitution conviction. That, and the lurid details that flowed from the eight-week trial have likely torpedoed his career. Brad Hunter has the details. |
