BATTING LEADOFF

With another week gone, another homestand complete, the Red Sox found themselves Wednesday night in the same place they’ve been: in the mediocre muck of the American League, unable to sustain any sort of momentum, doomed by their own fundamentally unsound play.

They split a pseudo-doubleheader with the Reds, following a 5-3 win in the early game, a resumption of the suspended Tuesday game, with a mess of an 8-4 loss in the nightcap. It was a fitting finish to a Fenway Park stretch in which they went 3-3 against Toronto and Cincinnati.

JUST IN CASE: Masataka Yoshida has been working out at first base in recent weeks, including with Triple A Worcester, a mostly casual introduction to a position at which he has no prior experience. Tim Healey writes that manager Alex Cora doesn't envision Yoshida starting at first any time soon, however.
