![]() Greetings!Are we in for another mega media merger? That's the scuttlebutt with the Wall Street Journal reporting that Paramount is preparing a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. In one sense, it's logical for the two to combine. Both companies need scale to compete with the likes of Netflix and Disney. The combination of HBO Max and Paramount+'s subscribers would bring it nearly on par with the two bigger streamers, and the size would allow it to compete more effectively with the cash-rich tech giants, which have been increasingly expanding their tendrils into media. But the consolidation would lead to yet one less media company in an industry that has already been carved out and disrupted by M&A time and time again. The possible deal also raises plenty of questions, from the fate of their respective cable businesses to how their news divisions — CNN and CBS News — co-exist.
