Arizona is addressing a high rate of drug overdose deaths among construction workers by promoting on-site access to Narcan. Nearly 200 construction workers died from overdoses in 2023, making up 13% of the state's overdose deaths. Drug education consultant Stephanie Siete attributes the trend to a combination of physical labor, injuries and a reluctance to seek help.

Regulatory Issues
A House Appropriations subcommittee has proposed budget cuts for OSHA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The proposal would cut NIOSH's budget by 14%, while MSHA would see a 10% cut and OSHA would see an 8% cut. The Senate has proposed maintaining or increasing funding for the agencies.

Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a bill that would require employers to protect workers from extreme heat and related illnesses. The legislation would require the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to create regulations similar to those proposed by OSHA and other states and cover areas such as training, emergency response, paid rest breaks, acclimatization and shade requirements.
