The Technical University of Munich, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nurnberg and Colibrium Additive have launched the federally funded AlaAF project, seeking to advance 3D printing of high-strength aluminum alloys for aerospace. The project calls for using special additives within metal powders for the laser powder bed fusion process. The approach could enable the use of previously unsuitable high-strength aluminum alloys in additive manufacturing, leading to lighter and stronger aerospace components.

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have developed a lithium-metal battery using a new liquid electrolyte that prevents dendrite growth, a major issue that has hindered lithium-metal battery development. According to a study in Nature Energy, the battery can power electric vehicles for 500 miles (800 kilometers) on a single charge.

Advances in engine management, heat exchange technology and high-temperature ceramic materials could make gas turbine engines more efficient and competitive for railway propulsion, writes Harry Valentine. Modern complex-cycle and closed-cycle gas turbines, enhanced by computer-controlled fuel injection and advanced materials, could rival diesel engines in power and efficiency, Valentine writes.
