Carbon Brief has just published an in-depth analysis of the latest trends in India’s CO2 emissions.

This analysis is the first in a new series, covering the world’s most populous nation, which is seeing the fastest economic growth of any major economy. India is also a key emitter, having contributed nearly two-fifths of the rise in CO2 emissions from the global energy sector since 2019.

Carried out for Carbon Brief by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), the analysis builds on the insights and impact of a similar series covering China, which began in 2019 and has been cited around the world by the likes of China Daily, the New York Times and BBC News.

The new analysis shows that clean-energy growth – with solar installations dominant – means India’s power-sector CO2 could peak by 2030. And changes in the power sector mean that, during the first half of 2025, India’s CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and cement grew at their slowest pace since 2001.
