Centreville Students, Families, and Community,
It was another full and energizing week at Centreville! The events and efforts across our school continue to reflect our shared commitment to a Positive School Climate and to Getting Better, Together.
Last week’s Annual Resource Fair brought families and community partners together, creating meaningful connections and providing access to valuable support, strengthening relationships across our school community. We also hosted our first-ever Centreville College Fair, with over 60 colleges and universities in attendance. Our students had a fantastic opportunity to engage with representatives and explore postsecondary options. Our performing arts department also showcased their talents with the Orchestra Fall Concert and our Choir Mic Night.
This week we will have our monthly PTSA meeting on Tuesday evening. At this meeting we will have current Centreville students share their tips and experiences in a panel titled “Thriving at Centreville High”. We invite all students and families, including our future Wildcats, to join us.
Thank you and Go Wildcats!

October 25 - Food For Neighbors Red Bag Event: Centreville High School is proud to partner with Food For Neighbors (FFN) to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity because even in a county as wealthy as Fairfax, one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger. Studies show that when adolescents are fed positive outcomes include increased enrollment in challenging courses, higher graduation rate, improved mental and physical health, a decrease in disruptive behaviors and increased participation in after-school activities".
Food For Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via their Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to the students every week through our food pantry. Please consider donating and/or volunteering to support this important cause.
October 27 - Senior Information Meeting: Graduation coordinators will be meeting with senior to review the senior year checklist and provide important information on how to stay organized. Topics will include paying senior dues, ordering caps and gowns, scheduling senior portraits, and other key deadlines.
October 30 - INOVA Blood Drive: SGA will be hosting an Inova Blood Drive on Thursday, October 30 in room 116. If you are 16 years old and weigh over 110 pounds, sign up at all lunches between October 21-29 and bring your signed permission form! Forms can be found in the main office or room 116. Come help save lives and receive a free t-shirt!

Choir Students Get a Special Visit: On Friday, October 3, our Choir students were treated to an amazing after-school workshop by professional choir Servire! Servire's mission is "sing and serve." Servire performed for our students, we sang for them (and received helpful feedback!), they led us through some fun warm-ups, and they taught us a song that some of us later performed with them at their Sunday afternoon concert at St. Andrew's! Some of our choir students also participated in a Saturday morning landscaping project at homes for adults with intellectual disabilities. Thank you to our Choral Director, Susie Kraft, for organizing these events.

Teaching Socratic Seminar Skills Using Taylor Swift Lyrics: In Ms. Devlin’s Honors English 11 class, students explored the power of language and meaning through a Socratic Seminar centered on Taylor Swift’s lyrics. By analyzing why her words resonate across generations, students practiced thoughtful questioning, active listening, and evidence-based discussion. This approach not only deepened their understanding of literary themes but also strengthened their ability to think critically and communicate effectively, which are skills essential for academic and real-world success.

Centreville Family Resource Fair: Last Wednesday night, Centreville High School hosted our annual Resource Fair. This event provided families with the opportunity to learn about valuable community resources and engage in meaningful conversations with staff members and fellow community members. It was wonderful to see so many CVHS staff members in attendance to support the event — we truly appreciate your time and commitment. We’re grateful to have such a strong and engaged community come together to learn more about the resources our school can connect them to. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success!

CVHS Hosts Inaugural College Fair: We hosted our first-ever Centreville High School College Fair, an impressive event with over 60 colleges and universities represented. From small liberal arts colleges to large SEC schools, our juniors and seniors had the opportunity to explore diverse postsecondary options and engage directly with representatives. The positive feedback from both students and college reps speaks volumes about the quality and impact of the event. A huge thank you to Kara Stamper and our Student Services team for your vision and organization in making this inaugural event such a success. It was an excellent example of how collaboration leads to better opportunities for our students.
Roadmap to College: What Students Should Do Each Year of High School: Join FCPS’ Family Resource Center for a webinar on what high school students should do to stand out on college applications. Receive clear strategies for college preparation and success. This webinar will take place on Friday, October 31, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and is for families of eighth graders and high school students. Register to attend.
FCPS Buildings Benefit All Community Members: In addition to our students and teachers, we estimate millions of visits by students and community members to Fairfax County schools through more than 500,000 events. Most of the public meeting and recreational facilities available in the county are FCPS facilities.
FCPS works with the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and with the Fairfax County Park Authority to ensure that school facilities and athletic fields are available to the public after school hours.

When Cell Phones Are Down, Learning and Engagement Are Up: Help Keep Our Schools Phone-Free: Cell phones can significantly impact academic performance — research has shown that it takes students 10 minutes or more to shift their focus back to learning after being interrupted by a single cell phone notification! You can help keep our schools phone-free (and your child focused on learning) by:
- Reminding your child about FCPS’ cell phone policy and telling them why you support it.
- Contacting your school’s front office (rather than your child directly) if there is a family emergency during the school day.
- Contacting your child about non-urgent matters before or after the school day.
- Waiting to respond to non-urgent texts from your child until the school day is over.
Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy. Also, view our Media Balance and Well-Being Toolkit for resources to help your child maintain a healthy and balanced relationship with technology at home.
All Families Opted in to Lightspeed Student Online Activity Report: FCPS provides families with a free service that allows parents and caregivers a way to stay informed about their child's online activity on any FCPS device. Starting Sunday, October 12, all parents and guardians who have access to student records in SIS ParentVUE will be automatically enrolled to receive a weekly Lightspeed Student Online Activity Report.
This report provides a summary of the websites your child visited during the previous week and is delivered every Sunday to your email directly from Lightspeed, our internet content filter.
Each weekly report also includes a link to register for the Lightspeed Parent Portal, which provides more detailed browsing information. This portal also gives you the ability to pause internet access on your child’s FCPS laptop during non-school hours, such as dinner or bedtime.
Visit the Lightspeed Parent Report page for more information and answers to frequently asked questions.
