Math Pilot Spotlight
Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,
We are proud to share that Sleepy Hollow is one of five Title I schools participating in a math pilot this year. The program, ClearMath, was selected for its rigor and conceptual approach—helping students think deeply, communicate their reasoning, and apply math in real-world situations.
ClearMath aligns with our district’s vision for high-quality math instruction. It helps students make connections between concepts, explain their thinking, and apply what they learn to real-world situations. Lessons include a balance of teacher-led instruction, hands-on activities, and collaborative problem-solving that foster both confidence and curiosity in mathematics.
In addition to the in-class learning experience, students will soon have access to digital tools that extend and personalize their learning:
- Zorbit’s Math Adventure: A game-based platform for younger learners that encourages exploration and joyful problem-solving.
- Mathia: An adaptive, personalized learning environment that provides real-time feedback and practice tailored to each student’s progress.
- Math Stream: A digital space that supports visualization, modeling, and interactive learning aligned to ClearMath lessons.
These resources are expected to be available by the beginning of the second quarter, and families will receive instructions for access as soon as they are ready.
Students who access above-grade-level math will continue to use the corresponding ClearMath resources for that grade level. We look forward to sharing updates as this pilot continues and appreciate your partnership in supporting mathematical growth for all students!
With gratitude and warmth, Principal Vega

SOL Cut Score Updates
The Virginia Board of Education adopted revised cut scores for Standards of Learning (SOL) tests measuring the 2023 Mathematics standards and the 2024 English standards at their September 25 business meeting. With the exception of students in the Class of 2026, students testing in SY2025-26 will be held to a higher bar to pass.
At the same time, the state Board recognized the need to phase in implementation of the new cut scores and will be collecting input from educators and community members this month. The state Board intends to finalize a multi-year implementation plan and pathways for high school verified credit at their October 22-23 meetings. The phase-in plan will utilize a new “approaching” performance level that falls between Fail/Basic and Proficient. Details on how the revised cut scores and this new performance level will impact expedited retakes, locally awarded verified credit, school accountability, and family reporting will be addressed during the Board’s October meetings.
The Sleepy Hollow Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (SHES PTA) is a volunteer-run organization of parents, caregivers, teachers, staff, administrators, and community members dedicated to making our school the best it can be for ALL students.
