Message from Mr. Greata

It's finally here – Homecoming Week! This is going to be one of the most exciting weeks of the year, and we can't wait to celebrate with all of you. We kicked things off last Friday with our Jersey Out Spirit Day, and the fun continues tonight at our annual Bonfire starting at 6:30 PM.

We then continue with our Spirit Week Schedule: Tourist Tuesday, Twin Day on Wednesday, Dress Your Age on Thursday, and then a USA OUT on Friday. On Thursday we’ll have our Homecoming pep rally, which is always spirited to the max!

Of course, don't miss out on the big events this weekend:

  • Parade Friday at 4:30 PM
  • Pig Out at the tailgate from 5 PM to 7PM
  • Homecoming Game & Court Royalty will be revealed during the halftime show
  • Rio Carnival Dance on Saturday, October 18, from 8 to 11 PM

This Wednesday, October 15, at 7:00 PM we’re excited to host singers from across our pyramid at our Annual Pyramid Chorus Concert. This concert is always a joy and I am sure it will be a night of beautiful melodies and harmony!

Last week, a team from our staff won an FCPS Impact Award, which recognizes contributions that transform student lives. Our Portrait of a CAV team shared how they’ve taken this work to new heights. The Portrait of a Graduate outlines the knowledge, skills, experiences, and attributes students need to succeed in life and be "future-ready." Additionally, FCPS encourages students to create presentations of learning to showcase how they’ve grown, proven their skills, and why it matters.

The Portrait of a CAV team at Carter G Woodson High School has been leading this work for years. Over several years, it has since evolved into a school-wide initiative where every student completes a presentation of learning each year based on one of the Portrait of a Graduate skills. This initiative has added purpose to our advisory periods and supported our school climate, as teachers and students build relationships while developing the presentations of learning. Events like Career Day have supplemented this work and conversations about post-secondary plans.

Please join me in congratulating the Portrait of a CAV team for their hard work and dedication. Thank you Paula DiSalvo, Katrina Cohen, Melinda Conner, Christie Day, Lee Hedrick, Mike Jeffry, Nishi Langhorne, Jeffrey Lonnet, Kathy Marcos, John Michals, Emma Miller, Ann Marie Rodgerson, Katherine Stransky, and Kelsey Treague for everything you do!

This year, we’ll continue to explore new ways to support our students’ post-secondary goals in alignment with the new Virginia School Performance and Support Framework. More importantly, we’re continuing to build on the great work that’s always been happening at Woodson High School. For example, we’ll be offering the ASVAB test to a broader range of students this year, not just those interested in the military. The test serves as a comprehensive evaluation of a student’s strengths and can help match them with a suitable career and post-secondary path and is aligned to the readiness portion of the new state framework.

If you’re wondering how to finance your post-secondary education, be sure to check out the information below regarding the FAFSA application.

As always, check out woodsonsports.com for all the sporting events this week. And a quick reminder that there is no school next Monday, October 20th, in observance of Diwali. To those observing, we wish you and your family a joyful and prosperous Diwali!

Have a wonderful week!

Checking out early?

The best and most efficient way to check your student out of school early is to send a note with them to take to the Attendance Office in the morning!

  • Your student will receive a pass to leave class at the time you specify.

  • You won't need to come inside the school; your student will simply come out to meet you.

Please be aware that if you sign your student out in person, it can take up to 30 minutes for the pass to reach them, making sending a note the quickest option!

For emergencies or last-minute appointments, you can also call the 24-hour attendance line at 703-503-4800 and leave a message.

Important Reminders:

  • Email is not accepted for reporting absences or early checkouts.

  • If a student becomes sick during the school day, they must be checked out through the clinic, not the attendance office.

Go Paperless!

Did you know you can view your student’s report card under the Documents tab in ParentVUE? You also have the option to “Go Paperless” for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by simply checking the box under your account details. This ensures your documents are delivered digitally, saving paper and arriving faster — plus they won’t be mailed to your home.

FAFSA Updates

Federal Student Aid has made the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available ahead of the scheduled release date. Any college-bound high school senior — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to work with their students to complete the FAFSA as early as possible. Check each college’s financial aid office website for deadlines and financial aid forms. Then, create an account, if you have not already done so, and fill out the FAFSA

The Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application has not yet opened but should be available in late January for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA. To help determine which aid option is right for you, visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website.

Over the next few months, College Access Fairfax will be offering several programs on completing the FAFSA/VASA and finding and applying for scholarships. Get information on these programs and how to access them on the College Access Fairfax website

In addition, College Access Fairfax staff are available for virtual one-on-one help sessions to complete the FAFSA/VASA. To request an appointment, families should email appointments@CollegeAccessFairfax.org.
