Sure it’s impressive that Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl at age 43 in 2021. But let’s see what kind of athlete he can be in 2058. An especially hot and humid Saturday in the north-central Pacific proved to be no match for a competitor whose achievement almost defies belief. Reuters reports: Natalie Grabow proved that age really is just a number when the
80-year-old became the oldest woman ever to complete the gruelling Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii on Saturday. The American age-grouper completed the 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and 42 km run in 16 hours, 45 minutes and 26 seconds, winning the F80-84 division in her 10th start at the iconic Hawaii event. For those like Nate Bargatze’s George Washington who cherish our right as free people to reject the metric system, that adds up to 2.4 miles of swimming and a 110-mile bike ride before running
a 26-mile marathon. Reuters quotes coach Michelle Lake, who has a wonderful gift for understatement, describing Ms. Grabow as “resilient” and “disciplined.” Reuters continues: “All of us in sport are competitive and want to do well, but it’s the journey that matters,” Grabow said ahead of the Kona race.
