| Massachusetts has a long history — and plenty of ghost stories to go with it. From haunted homes to eerie tunnels, many places across the state have strange stories that never seem to go away. Here are eight of the most well-known. 1.  Lizzie Borden House — Fall RiverThe Lizzie Borden House is one of the most famous haunted homes in America. It was the scene of the 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden. Their daughter, Lizzie, was accused and tried but found not guilty. Today, the Fall River home is a bed and breakfast that draws visitors from around the country. Guests often say they hear footsteps and voices in the night.
 2.  Danvers State Hospital — DanversThe old Danvers State Hospital was once one of the largest psychiatric facilities in Massachusetts. It opened in 1878 and became known for its overcrowding and harsh conditions. Most of the property was later used for apartments, but people still report strange sounds and shadows. The 2001 horror movie Session 9 was filmed in the main building before most of it was demolished in 2006.
 3.  USS Salem — QuincyThe USS Salem is a Cold War–era heavy cruiser docked at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy. Volunteers and visitors say the ship is haunted. They claim to hear voices and see figures moving in empty rooms. The ship once served as a temporary morgue after an earthquake in Greece in 1953, which adds to its reputation.
 4.  Hoosac Tunnel — North AdamsThe Hoosac Tunnel in the Berkshires is called “The Bloody Pit.” Construction took 25 years and cost more than 100 workers their lives. The 4.75-mile tunnel is still used by trains, but locals say it’s haunted by miners who died during construction. People have reported hearing voices and seeing lights inside.
 5.  Houghton Mansion — North AdamsThe Houghton Mansion was built in the late 1800s by A.C. Houghton, a local businessman. After a car accident killed his daughter and others in 1914, tragedy seemed to follow the family. The mansion later became a Masonic lodge and is now a stop for ghost hunters – although the public isn't welcome inside the building. Visitors claim to hear voices and feel sudden drops in temperature.
 6.  Bridgewater Triangle — Southeastern MassachusettsThe Bridgewater Triangle is a 200-square-mile area that covers the towns  of Bridgewater, Rehoboth, and Freetown, among others. Locals say it’s home to strange lights, mysterious creatures, and ghostly figures. Reports of unexplained sounds, UFO sightings, and other eerie encounters go back decades. The Freetown State Forest is especially known for stories of being haunted and other strange happenings.
 7.  Hammond Castle — GloucesterHammond Castle was built in the 1920s by inventor John Hays Hammond Jr.. The castle overlooks Gloucester Harbor and is filled with antiques and artifacts from around the world. People say they have heard footsteps, voices, and organ music coming from empty rooms. The museum staff has long said the castle spawns ghost stories.
 8.  Longfellow’s Wayside Inn — SudburyThe Wayside Inn is one of the oldest operating inns in the country. It dates back to 1716 and inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Tales of a Wayside Inn. Guests and employees have claimed to see a woman in a white dress on the stairs. They claim it's the spirit of Jerusha Howe, a former innkeeper’s daughter. People say she still lingers, waiting for a lover who never returned.
