Millions of people in US affected by Conduent data breach
Conduent Business Solutions, a back-end processing and payment services company, reported a data breach affecting millions of people across several states, including more than 4 million in Texas and over 1 million in Oregon. The breach occurred from October 2024 to January 2025, and involved the exfiltration of personal information. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana and Premera Blue Cross in Washington are among the insurers that have posted notices related to the breach.

Medicare spending on disease-modifying therapies grows

Medicare Part D spending on disease-modifying therapies for immune-mediated neurologic disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, increased by 70% from 2013 to 2022, but usage remained stable at 2% of claims, according to a study in JAMA Network Open. Claims for 29 DMTs decreased by 15% over the study period, but total payments for those drugs increased by 33% after adjusting for prescription drug inflation. Overall, DMTs accounted for 41% of Medicare drug expenditures.

ACA premiums expected to rise 26% for 2026
Premiums for health insurance plans on Affordable Care Act exchanges will increase by an average of 26% in 2026, according to KFF, but the amount subscribers pay is expected to rise 114% on average, as Congress has not extended enhanced tax credits. An estimated 3.5 million more people will be uninsured in 2027 if Congress does not extend enhanced subsidies, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

John Muir Health in California is expanding the use of artificial intelligence to reduce administrative burdens and improve patient care. Chief Medical Information Officer Priti Patel said the health system's AI journey began with risk prediction and has shifted to generative tools, such as ambient scribing, which has already reduced after-hours work and improved patient experiences in ambulatory clinics. Now Patel is considering AI for case management, scheduling, drug refills and revenue cycle management.

Chief financial officers can adopt clear ROI frameworks, tie virtual care to measurable results, embed financial accountability into vendor relationships and require full integration of virtual care platforms with existing systems, according to the report.

Calif. restricts AI chatbots from claiming medical credentials
California has enacted a new law that prohibits AI chatbots from being presented as licensed health care providers. Utah and Nevada have similar laws, and New Jersey and Pennsylvania are among the states considering them. "[T]here's certainly concern that some AI chatbots are marketing directly to children and minors, and there's direct evidence that some will actually pull up a fake medical license number," said psychiatrist John Torous, director of the Digital Psychiatry Division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
