Techstars Startup Digest Toronto

Locally curated opportunities, talks, workshops, and other events for those interested in creating a startup, growing one, or who want to connect with startups in the Greater Toronto Area.

Hello Toronto startups and entrepreneurs! Toronto Metropolitan University's DMZ is an important part of this city's startup ecosystem. With two announcements this past week, the local tech incubator expanded its reach and helped fund four Black-led startups.

DMZ is launching a program with Pearson International Airport, which will offer startups access to a live operational environment where innovative technologies can be tested at scale. The hope is to support capacity growth, drive operational efficiencies, enhance passenger experience, gather real-time information, boost non-aeronautical revenue, and improve how travellers and employees interact with airport amenities.

Pearson Airport is also teaming up with Toronto's Creative Destruction Lab, as part of the incubator's Putting AI to Work program. The partnership will focus on artificial intelligence solutions that can improve the airport's efficiency and resilience in areas such as baggage handling, gate management and integrated command centres.

This past Thursday, DMZ also helped four Black-led startups secure a record $400K as part of its annual Black Innovation Summit. Ten startups from across Canada took their pitches to the stage, vying for the largest prize in the event's history. Two of the four winning startups are situated in the GTA: Kiwi Charge, providing autonomous charging units for electric vehicles in buildings that lack a charging infrastructure through a charging-as-a-service mode, and Collect Laboratories, which develops nanotech-powered products for women to screen for HPV and cervical cancer without the need for invasive tests. Congrats to both of them!

Have a great week!
