Soraya Martinez Ferrada may not be well known to most Montrealers, the Gazette’s Jason Magder writes, but she is a political veteran who won her first election in 2005 as a city councillor for the Saint-Michel district and who served two terms with the Trudeau government.
She is also the city’s second woman and first Latin American person to be elected mayor.
“This is the message of a city that recognizes the richness of its diversity,” she told supporters Sunday.
