Decades of protection helped these sea creatures recover. So why are some scientists worried?

Every once in a while, the natural world surprises us with some good news. This time, it’s about green sea turtles, those lovable, long-living ocean wanderers that seemed, not long ago, to be in big, big trouble.

After decades of protection, they’re coming back.

Their numbers are up nearly 30 percent since the 1970s. In Florida, beaches that once saw a few dozen nests now brim with tens of thousands. Scientists who’ve spent their careers counting hatchlings are daring to say it out loud: we did something right. But as Vox environmental correspondent Benji Jones reports, even this good news comes with a major caveat.

This is a story about resilience, yes, but also about how the job of saving endangered species is never really finished — even when it seems like it is. Don’t miss Benji’s recent story to learn more.

At Vox, we believe in telling stories like this one — nuanced, hopeful, and messy. If this kind of journalism matters to you, consider becoming a Vox Member.
