Children of Pithiviers
By Sheila Kohler

It’s 1959 in the Loiret region of France, and Sorbonne University student Deidre is summering in the country home of an aristocratic couple. She’s been sent to this remote oasis to hide from a scandal wrought from a moment of weakness. But Madame Catherine and Monsieur Guy have secrets of their own they’ve been concealing.

Though Deidre feels herself being seduced by this pair’s flashy ways, there’s not enough glamor in the world to rid this small town of the looming darkness left behind by the thousands of Jewish children imprisoned in the Pithiviers Nazi concentration camp. When Deidre discovers a diary written by two Jewish sisters who hid in her hosts’ attic, the tale she finds within forces her to face difficult truths about sacrifice and survival.
