Dear aaa,
His scarred face may show an intimidating, dominating lion, but his personality tells quite a different story. Lion Scar is dubbed ‘the peaceful lion’ for his calm and gentle disposition.
Declawed as a cub to prevent injury to his caretakers and the former zoo’s visitors, he had no choice but to be submissive to his two brothers and another male lion, with whom he’s been sharing one enclosure for more than a decade. |

But his friendliness couldn’t protect him from another male’s claws in a fight.
A few months ago, Scar got into a fight with another male, who gave him the wound that named him. He bears a ghastly scar on his eye, which, despite antibiotic treatments, still looks painfully infected.
Scar needs an immediate veterinary check to determine whether the eye could be saved or if it must be removed. The sooner we intervene, the higher the chance of saving his eye! |
Despite our efforts, the animals are far from safe.
Since assuming responsibility for the big cats and bears at the former Zoo Luján, our team has acted swiftly: we’ve secured water access, reinforced enclosures, improved feeding routines, and begun addressing urgent welfare concerns.
But these are just emergency measures. To truly help animals like Scar, we must conduct detailed health assessments, deliver targeted veterinary care, and find long-term solutions for over 60 big cats and two bears still trapped in unsuitable conditions. |
This mission is part of a larger vision. Help us shape what comes next.
Through our Memorandum of Understanding with the Argentine government, FOUR PAWS is working to end the suffering of big cats across the country by improving welfare standards and supporting legal reforms that protect future generations of big cats.
Together, we can make sure Scar and his companions are the last to endure this kind of neglect. Your support today helps us move from emergency response to lasting change!
Donate now to help Scar and build a better future for all big cats in Argentina. |
Warm regards,
Natalie Hood
