Ask any great guitarist what their ‘secret’ is, and they’ll all rattle off the same thing...

"Practice."

Not that glamorous, right?! But it’s true. Your favorite guitarist may look like a ‘natural’, but behind all that easy-playing is a metric ton of practice time.

So if you’re still struggling to find time to practice, and you’d like to know how much time you really need in order to hit your goals, then stick around as I reveal how just 10 minutes a day can begin to sculpt a brand new you.

Step 1 - Find your time and place

10 minutes isn’t a lot of time, but finding it can be hard. We’ll make excuses and find other things to do instead of playing our guitars.

So the trick to finding your own 10 minute practice spot is to keep it consistent. For example - my favorite time to practice used to be when I first got home in the evening.

I’d walk in the door, grab my guitar and begin bashing out scales and licks immediately.

Soon, my brain learned that 5.30pm = practice time, and my couch = practice area. This level of time and place association helped trick my brain into wanting to play as soon as I walked in the door.

So, do the same thing. Find a time and place in each day that suits you for practice. Maybe it’s the 10 minutes after doing the dishes in the evening, so you can take those warm hands and play free and easy on your guitar.

Or it’s as soon as you put your kids to bed. Whatever time you designate, don’t let anything get in the way of this new routine. Creating new habits is crucial in seeing these improvements.

Step 2 - Hold yourself accountable

Now that you’ve got a practice time and place, you need extra motivation to actually turn up. And to do that, you’re going to need a little help from a friend.

So message a mate, and make them a deal…

Tell them that IF you miss a single practice session this week, you’ll do something you really dislike. Like, mow their lawns. Or you’ll wear the shirt of a football team they love (and you despise!).

The trick here isn’t so much the penalty, it’s the people. Once you include a friend or family member in the process, you’re not only holding yourself accountable, but other people are as well! And these are people you actually care about.

Not letting them down is a proven motivating factor. And this level of accountability will only spur you onwards.

Step 3 - 10 minutes of wisdom

So you’ve got a practice time and place, AND you’re being held accountable by yourself and a friend. Well done!

But now the big question - what do you play?

With 10 minute blocks of practice time, you’ll want to focus on the accuracy of playing. So some simple practice riffs like the one attached will make a massive difference to your fingers.

If you focus on simple, fun exercises 10 minutes a day for the first week, you’ll begin to feel your strength and dexterity returning to your hands.

There’s no point spending 10 minutes a day trying to learn a complicated song if your hands will let you down. That’s why the first week or two is spent getting your hands up to par.

And then…. something magical happens about ten days into this process - your hands start to really feel the difference. Your playing becomes cleaner, more precise. And this fans the flames inside your chest. You’ll want to play more.

And all of a sudden, those 10 minute practice sessions might turn into 20 or 30 minutes, you’ll start playing songs, or going through an entire guitar course.

But none of this happens without the 3 basic tenets - 10 minutes a day, every day, in your practice place, focusing on fun exercises to amplify your fingers, while being held accountable for your actions.

Follow these steps and you’ll be loving your guitar playing once again, and wondering how 10 minutes a day seemed so elusive, for so long.

Small steps, big journeys :-)

See you soon!
