How does a legendary media brand with “gentleman” in the name survive in a time when men seem particularly…ungentlemanly? That’s what Will Welch has been grappling with over the last several years.

Joining us from GQ’s headquarters at One World Trade earlier this week, GQ’s global editorial director talked us through how he sees this era of men’s fashion, culture, and health at a moment of loosening gender norms and the inevitable trad backlash.

“How do you make a magazine or a brand that is about being cool when you’re so damn old? It’s because I’m young at heart,” he joked.

“I guess my favorite thing about my job, and one of the things that I think I’m best at, and one of the things that bears out the longer that I do this, is: I just love hiring,” he added. “I just like finding young people who in some weird and surprising way are gonna fit into what we’re doing — or better yet, modify it or give it some weird offshoot.”

“That’s what keeps GQ culturally relevant,” he said.

Will also walked us through his favorite and least-favorite celebrities to work with, explained why Trump’s ties have made him weirdly self-conscious about one of his own fashion choices, and much more.
