U.S. airlines cancel more than 1,000 flights on the first day of cuts

Airlines mostly stayed on schedule Friday while cutting more than 1,000 flights because of the government shutdown. More canceled flights are expected in the coming days to comply with the Federal Aviation Administration’s order to reduce service at the busiest airports.
