As we pay tribute today to those we lost in war, we bring you a story from Belgium, where our writer Steve Lyons cycled Canadalaan to revisit the grounds where his grandfather fought in 1917. Though the two never met, the trip offered a sense of connection and understanding to the past. Visiting Passchendaele, Lyons writes: “I sit at the memorial, trying to imagine the fear and anguish the soldiers must have felt. Mostly, I try to imagine what my grandfatherwould have seen, endured and carried home with him.”
