Higher-ed perception, reality diverge sharply
A disconnect exists between the public's perception and the data regarding higher education. While skepticism toward colleges has grown due to concerns about tuition and the value of a degree, data show that college tuition has become more affordable, and the economic return on a bachelor's degree remains high. Enrollment in four-year colleges has almost fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels, while enrollment in two-year colleges has declined.

Esports programs offer students teamwork, career skills

Esports is increasingly being integrated into high school and college curricula, providing students with opportunities to develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills. Luke Rimarcik, esports program manager at the University of Michigan-Flint, notes the growing job opportunities in esports beyond gaming. "Students are learning not only great skills within casting, production, technical equipment, but like there are so many opportunities to like learn and grow within an esports program, so just because it's gaming doesn't mean you can't benefit from it," Rimarcik says.

Delaware universities are embracing esports for academic and workforce development, with Wilmington University, the University of Delaware, and Goldey-Beacom College building facilities, designing curriculum and partnering with government and gaming companies. Wilmington University has a 16-computer esports lab and offers an esports certificate, while the University of Delaware offers a bachelor's degree in game studies and esports
