Nadia Evangelou, NAR senior economist and director of real estate research, examines the tradeoffs that come with the proposed 50-year mortgage loan. While it would offer slightly smaller mortgage payments for families and broaden access for some potential buyers, the idea doesn't address the real reason affordability remains so difficult: There aren't enough homes at the price points that most people can afford to buy, she says.

She says the process was far more achievable than she expected and hopes more first-time buyers learn about similar resources.

Interior designers suggest a variety of renovation ideas to make laundry rooms more enjoyable and functional, such as adding color with wallpaper and paint, installing custom surrounds for washers and dryers, incorporating vintage decor and creating hidden laundry spaces. Other tips include raising appliances for easier access, adding a dog washing station and increasing counter space.
