This week, First Round's Head of Brand and Product Marketing walks you through the playbook she's used to pick dozens of company names. Hi there. I’m Arielle Jackson, First Round’s Head of Brand and Product Marketing. Over the past ten years, I’ve helped hundreds of founders with early positioning, brand identity and launch comms — and naming is consistently one of the trickiest problems to solve. Very few founders run a real process for how to land on the right name. If you do a quick look for resources out there, you’re likely to find a random “name generator” that’ll give you something soulless and generic. So I wrote about the process I’ve used to help dozens of companies come up with names, which includes: - How to have a brainstorm and considerations when narrowing down your list
- How to get feedback from both initiated and uninitiated users
- Domain, trademark and other legal considerations many founders don’t consider…sometimes until it’s too late
We also looked at a number of names and why they work. Some of my favorites are: My hope is that this essay allows more founders to DIY naming. Thanks, as always, for reading and sharing!
