| | | | | Good morning, Chicago. It’s peak college football season, and this year more than ever, the sport is all about the money. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti recently pitched the 18 schools on a $2.4 billion private equity deal that would give programs sorely needed cash in exchange for handing over future income from media rights. This type of deal sounds familiar to the Tribune Editorial Board. Chicago famously entered a similar agreement involving its parking meters. Michigan is questioning this plan, and the board calls on other teams to follow its lead. Read all the reasons the board thinks this deal is a bad idea below. Speaking of bad ideas, U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s move to announce his retirement at the last minute has gotten national attention. The House voted 236-184-4 to reprimand Garcia. This shows that the Chicago Way does not translate well out of town, the board writes in its second piece today. In commentary, Republican gubernatorial candidate Ted Dabrowski writes what he thinks his party’s role is in a state run by Democrats. A professor of history criticizes the British royal family for recent moves to cast away Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly a prince, to another country instead of facing continued scrutiny. And a Chicago-area freelance journalist writes about how tourists crave diversity when they travel and how Chicago’s neighborhoods can deliver just that. Thanks for reading. Thanksgiving is almost a week away, and we’d like to hear from you about what is making you feel thankful this year. (Sincere thoughts only, please.)
