WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor announced today that its Mine Safety and Health Administration has awarded more than $10.5 million in grants to organizations in 45 states, the Navajo Nation, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to reduce mining accidents, injuries, and illnesses by supporting programs such as safety and health courses.“Restoring America’s global economic dominance starts with our hardworking miners, and it’s the Labor Department’s responsibility to help them accomplish this mission by keeping them safe on the job,” said Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer. “The Trump Administration will continue doing everything we can to protect blue-collar workers and ensure they have the resources they need to thrive.”“We are committed to working collaboratively with both mine operators and miners to provide secure working environments,” said Deputy Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling. “By investing more than $10 million to promote safety, we will ensure every miner returns home to their families after their shifts.”MSHA is awarding these grants to support the delivery of federally mandated training and re-training for miners at surface, underground coal, and metal and nonmetal mines, along with miners employed in shell dredging or surface stone, sand, and gravel-mining operations. MSHA state grants are awarded in response to applications by states and territories. Funds are provided to state mine inspectors’ offices, state departments of labor and state-supported universities and colleges. Recipients tailor their training programs to address their area’s mining conditions and hazards miners may encounter.Learn more about MSHA.MSHA State Grants have been awarded to the following organizations:RecipientCityState/TerritoryAwardBevill State Community College JasperAL $244,134University of Alaska at FairbanksFairbanksAK $161,078Arizona State Mine Inspector’s OfficePhoenixAZ $445,545Navajo Nation Minerals DepartmentWindow RockAZ $46,430Arkansas Department of Labor and LicensingLittle Rock AR $140,461Central Connecticut State UniversityNew BritainCT $101,157Colorado Department of Natural ResourcesDenverCO $265,048Tallahassee Community CollegeTallahasseeFL $208,973Technical College System of GeorgiaSandersvilleGA $225,981Eastern Iowa Community College DistrictDavenportIA $201,921North Idaho CollegePost FallsID $177,439Illinois Department of Natural ResourcesSpringfieldIL $251,087Vincennes UniversityVincennesIN $155,405Hutchinson Community College & Area Vocational SchoolHutchinsonKS $144,551Kentucky Energy & Environment CabinetFrankfortKY $338,819Northshore Technical Community CollegeLacombreLA $118,418Massachusetts Department of Labor StandardsBostonMA $105,031Maryland Center for Environmental Training La PlataMD $76,377Maine Department of LaborAugustaME $117,104Michigan Technological UniversityHoughtonMI $291,052Minnesota State Colleges & UniversitiesSt PaulMN $407,358Missouri Department of Labor & Industrial RelationsJefferson CityMO $299,163Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana IslandsSaipanMP $18,571Mississippi Department of Environmental QualityJacksonMS $28,778 Montana Department of Labor & IndustryHelenaMT $221,609University of Nebraska at KearneyKearneyNE $95,511New Hampshire Department of Business & Economic AffairsConcordNH $83,257New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce DevelopmentTrentonNJ $75,974New Mexico Institute of Mining & TechnologySocorroNM $176,242Nevada Division of Industrial RelationsCarson CityNV $432,949New York Department of LaborAlbany NY $347,221North Carolina Department of LaborRaleighNC $193,169North Dakota Department of Career & Technical EducationBismarckND $120,257Ohio Department of Natural Resources ColumbusOH $241,834Oklahoma Department of MinesWilburtonOK $187,963Eastern Oregon UniversityLa Grande OR $182,743Pennsylvania Department of Environmental ProtectionHarrisburgPA $578,386Tri-County Technical CollegePendletonSC $111,787South Dakota School of Mines & TechnologyRapid CitySD $109,756Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce DevelopmentNashvilleTN $225,633University of Texas at AustinAustinTX $740,282Utah State UniversityLoganUT $284,615Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals & EnergyBig Stone GapVA$241,775Vermont Department of LaborMontpelierVT $117,633Northcentral Technical College DistrictWausauWI $361,650West Virginia Office of Miners Health Safety & TrainingCharlestonWV $530,429Gillette Community College DistrictGilletteWY $306,445Total  $10,537,000
