A little bit of proactive cleaning now — and the right tools — can go a long way in making post-Thanksgiving cleanup more bearable. Start here:
- Clean your oven: Baked-on spills can start to smoke when the oven gets hot, so take a moment to clear out clumpy, crusty spots now before your precious turkey and sides go in. Spraying the crud on the walls, floor, racks, and door with a dish-soap solution (or sprinkling Bar Keepers Friend on extra-stubborn spots) should do the trick.
- Clear out your garbage disposal: All you need is dish soap, hot water, and ice cubes. That’s right, back away from the lemon. Here’s our expert advice.
- Get the right dishwasher detergent: If you tend to open your washer to cloudy glassware and spattered plates, consider upgrading to one of our favorite pods and powders.
- Make space in the fridge: Leftovers incoming! Now is a great time to throw away all of those questionable condiments and mystery jars languishing in the back of your fridge. Moving forward, a good set of clear food storage containers can make it easy to identify and use up those lurkers. (Speaking of leftovers, we have some hacks to freeze ’em better, so your freezer doesn’t get cluttered with giant, unusable blocks of food.)
- Clean as you cook: Our kitchen expert calls this $12 bench scraper an indispensable tool. Scrape away stubborn bits of dough caked onto a cutting board, collect loose flour in that hard-to-reach countertop corner, and scoop minced onion from one place to another without leaving scraps behind.
