Opening Doors
Inkluded is targeting the book business’s diversity problem at the source, offering free career preparation to aspiring BIPOC publishing professionals across the country, and partnering with Big Five publishers to expand its reach. Catapult has acquired Portland, Ore.–based indie publisher Hawthorne Books, which will become its fourth imprint. We talked with the team at the University of Texas Press about how the publisher’s appeal to both academic and trade audiences has proved a winning model after 75 years. An Alabama board has voted to remove books that discuss transgender identities from the teen and children’s sections of all public libraries in the state, reports the AP. Bolu Babalola’s rom-com Honey and Spice is getting a film adaptation from the studio behind Bridget Jones’s Diary and Love Actually, per Deadline. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s memoir Diary of a Prisoner will come out with Fayard on December 10, reports the Washington Post. An first edition of the original Superman comic, published in 1939, has been sold for more than $9 million at auction, per NBC. And for GQ, Chris Black takes a critical look at Substack’s payment model and what readers lose when “every written word is only available à la carte.”
