Continuing to work toward source reduction in consumer packaged goods is important for producers, consumers and the environment, but it is also essential to be realistic when making long-term plans and navigating regulatory options. The Consumer Brands Association, the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment and the Consumer Technology Association said in a recent report that reduction of around 5 million metric tons between 2019 and 2014 was laudable, but continued progress will rely on a variety of factors, including consensus on goals and extended producer responsibility policies that are not overly restrictive.
