Principal's Message

Greetings Tiger Families!

Next Thursday we will celebrate Thanksgiving, which of course is a traditional time to spend with family and friends and reflect on all that we are thankful for. Every year I am the most thankful for the health and safety of the family and friends that I am lucky to have in my life. As well as the opportunity work alongside all our terrific Tigers here at Twain. We are fortunate to have a supportive community, a talented and dedicated faculty and staff, and a student body with endless potential.

“For me, every hour is grace. And I feel gratitude in my heart each time I can meet someone and look at his or her smile.” – Holocaust Survivor and author, Elie Wiesel

I hope we can all strive to have the gratitude shared by Mr. Wiesel in this quote as we celebrate all that we are fortunate to have this Thanksgiving – even those things as simple as the smile directed our way. Sadly, although this is a joyful time of year for many, it can also be a stressful and sad time for others. If you are in need of information to support your student’s mental health and resiliency, you can find information and resources on the FCPS Website here. If you or someone you know is in a mental health crisis, you can access information about resources here.

Please note that we will not have a newsletter next week, so your favorite Friday reading material will return on Friday, December 5th!

Have a nice weekend and a restful Thanksgiving holiday.

Gratefully,

Matt

Crosswalk & Kiss & Ride Safety Reminders

As the late autumn & winter weather has certainly arrived, there is an increase in the number of students being dropped off by parents and guardians in the morning. We always prioritize safety first, and efficiency second during our arrival and dismissal procedures. We know that morning arrival can be stressful, and it can be tempting to rush or cut corners. Please review the reminders below as we continue to partner to have a safe start to our day each and every day at Twain.

  • Plan your departure time with a small cushion to allow for on-time drop-off.
  • Students are unable to enter the building until 7:00 AM, which is the earliest time we officially have staff present to provide supervision. Students dropped off prior to 7:00 AM remain outside until our doors open.
  • Pull forward as far to the front of the drop-off zone as possible, to allow multiple cars to unload efficiently and then exit campus.
  • Only drop students off in the designated drop-off zone. Dropping students off in the staff parking lot can create unsafe pedestrian situations during a busy 25-minute timeframe.
  • Please do not use the curb along Franconia Road or Craft Road in the neighborhood across Franconia Road as a drop-off zone. Doing so creates an untenable pedestrian flow across the crosswalk that does not allow for the efficient flow of cars on Franconia Road. Additionally, some of the students are then running across a busy road while not using the crosswalk.
  • Our crossing guard supports our safe arrival to school each day, and then moves down Franconia Road to do the same at Edison High School. Therefore, she cannot remain with us past 7:25. Students arriving this close to our start time may have to cross without the crossing guard being present.

Thank you again for your partnership in making sure our Tigers can arrive to school safely and on time every day.

Community Meal Nights Hosted by FCPS

The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services will host dinners for our students, families, and anyone in the community who needs a meal this month! These dinners will offer a welcoming environment where families can connect over a warm meal.

Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving-inspired dinner from 6 to 7 p.m. on:

Meals will be offered at no cost for both children and adults on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is required, and you do not need to be an FCPS student or family to receive a meal.

Help Us Write FCPS’ Next Chapter: Fiscal Year 2027 Budget

A book with FCPS Budget on the side. A glowing yellow bring road emerges. Students walk on the road with school-related icons surrounding them.

There’s a story behind the success of every FCPS student — a story about what’s possible when FCPS receives the appropriate funding for world-class teachers, rigorous academics, and future-ready learning experiences. At FCPS, student success starts with a strong budget!

We’re currently developing our Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, which will be presented by Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid to the School Board in January.

During this process, we’ll be sharing our budget story with you. The different chapters will explain the impact of chronic underfunding, why strong funding benefits all of Fairfax County, what’s at stake when our schools don’t get the support they need, and what Fairfax County residents can do to support our schools, students, and teachers.

We invite you to follow along and learn how you can help our community write its next chapter!

Please review and provide your consent through our easy-to-use Parent Digital Consent system for these two new options:

  • Additional Google Services – Chrome Web Store
  • Additional Google Services – Google Play Store

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting safe and effective digital learning experiences for all students. For questions or support, please visit FCPS’ Family Technology Resources page or open a ticket with our Technical Support desk.
