Colorado River talks uncertain, but bright spots take shape

The Colorado River Basin States missed a federal deadline to reach a new water-sharing agreement, but they have made enough progress to continue negotiations until February. The states agree that "long-term sustainability" is a priority for the river, but details are still being worked out, said Utah negotiator Gene Shawcroft. In Colorado, the state Water Conservation Board has approved a proposal to use the Shoshone Power Plant's water rights to support the river's ecosystem, which bodes well for efforts to maintain current flows.

La. inland wetlands face new threats under WOTUS changes
Louisiana's inland wetlands, which make up nearly 60% of the state's wetland area, face heightened risk under the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed changes to the waters of the US rule. The new definitions could remove federal and state protections from many of these areas, particularly those separated from waterways by levees or future construction. Environmental advocates warn that this could lead to increased development, reduced flood control and harm to ecosystems.

Tampa Bay Water Wise hits 1M-gallon daily savings goal
Tampa Bay Water has reached its goal of conserving 1 million gallons of water per day through the Water Wise initiative, which began in 2020. Hotels and apartment buildings have been the biggest contributors to the effort, but homeowners have also helped by upgrading toilets and sprinkler systems. Tampa Bay Water offers rebates covering 20% to 50% of project costs, and the program's next goal is to save 4 million gallons per day by 2030.
