Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings, SoCo family,

As we head into the Thanksgiving season, I hope each of you finds time to pause, breathe, and enjoy the people who bring meaning to your life. This time of year reminds us that gratitude isn’t only about the big milestones—it’s also about appreciating the quiet moments, the community around us, and the simple gift of being here together. May the week ahead offer you space to reflect, recharge, and hold close all that truly matters.

Now, onto this week’s reflections …

Student and Staff Belonging

Stallions Stampede into the Next Round

Congratulations to our football team for last week’s impressive win over Falls Church in the Regional Quarter-finals. Their teamwork and persistence were the steady engine that kept them moving forward, each player powering the next toward a common goal. Like a determined stallion charging across open ground, they delivered a performance that made this victory truly noteworthy. I want to thank Alex Higgins once again for these outstanding photos.

Football

Community, Connection, and Clubs Galore

Club Day brought more than 50 student organizations together, giving every Stallion a chance to explore new interests and talk directly with current club members. Held during Advisory, the event ensured all students had the opportunity to wander, wonder, and discover where they might belong. It was a showcase of school spirit and student voice, with each table offering a fresh doorway into involvement.

High Quality Instruction

Classroom Spotlight: Learning in Action

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Ms. Kelly Cousins’s classroom and was impressed by how she engages and supports her students. She led a thoughtful review of the Unit 3 test, going over tricky questions and explaining why the answers were correct, which helped students really understand the material. Her classroom is welcoming and organized, with tables set up for group work, colorful science posters, and lots of encouragement that helps students feel confident in their learning. Ms. Cousins also keeps a variety of assignments, giving students plenty of opportunities to practice, learn, and show what they know. We are truly fortunate to have her as part of the South County family.

School Culture

SoCo Shines: Top 25 in Northern Virginia!

Northern Virginia magazine has recognized South County High School as one of the Top 25 high schools in the region, celebrating our students’ dedication and achievements. From a 99% on-time graduation rate to strong participation in AP/IB courses and advanced diplomas, our Stallions continue to set high standards in academics and attendance. We’re proud of this recognition and invite you to read the full article here.

Shining Stars Join the Legacy

This week, South County proudly welcomed more than 200 new members into the National Honor Society, celebrating their dedication to scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Each student, like a stallion charging toward the horizon, exudes energy, ambition, and unstoppable potential. We applaud their hard work and commitment, knowing they will continue to inspire their peers and community.

Staff Spotlight

Kelley Peck is a veteran SoCo teacher and the driving force behind one of our largest and most popular programs, Student Leadership. Now in her 23rd year of teaching, she has spent 13 years at SoCo, teaching Biology, Anatomy, and Leadership. She most enjoys building lasting relationships with students, especially through the Leadership program, where she has the unique opportunity to teach students over multiple years and witness their growth and maturity. Outside of school, Mrs. Peck enjoys baking and photography, and we are grateful that SoCo has been her professional home.

Coach's Corner

Building our positive school culture includes fostering empathy and the ability to understand different perspectives. At home, you can encourage this by discussing different viewpoints in books, movies, or real-life situations. Ask your child to consider how others might feel or why someone might act a certain way. This helps them develop crucial social-emotional skills and build stronger, more understanding relationships.

Club Corner

The SoCo Emergency Relief Club is dedicated to supporting the community during crises, including natural disasters and other emergencies. The club raises funds, organizes drives to collect essential supplies, and creates and donates first aid kits to the local community center. In addition to providing immediate assistance, members promote emergency preparedness by teaching valuable skills, such as how to develop a family emergency plan. Open to all students, the club offers opportunities to meet new people, build leadership skills, and make a meaningful, positive impact in the community. If you have any questions or comments about the South County Emergency Relief club, please contact the sponsor, Ms. Hansen, at vnhansen@fcps.edu.

Friday Funnies

Each Friday, I’ve been sharing a few “dad jokes” with our students to bring a little laughter to the end of the week, and I hope our parents enjoy them too! For example, …

What sound does a turkey’s phone make? Wing, wing!

And after the big football game, what did the mashed potatoes say? We’re whipped!

Don’t worry, these jokes are not copyrighted, so feel free to share them with family and friends!

As we wrap up this week, I want to remind everyone that next week will be a two-day school week due to the Thanksgiving Break. While there won’t be a message from me during the short week, I hope you all enjoy the time with family and friends. I look forward to returning on Friday, December 5, with updates and highlights from SoCo.
