Specialist Spotlight - Library

Welcome to Quarter 2 in the Bren Mar Park Library! All of our students are becoming curious readers. I am so proud of them for trying new genres and types of reading. For the most part they are doing a great job returning their borrowed books on time so that others may enjoy those titles.

Thank you for continuing to talk with your children about the books they are choosing to read. Remember that a child does not have to be able to read a book to borrow a book. Reading as a family is important in building strong readers. Our picture books, the ones with an E on the spine (for Everybody), are made for shared reading.

During library class time, we are focusing intently on critical thinking skills and inquiry/research skills for learning. Kindergarteners are working on synthesis as we start the third of our three author studies this fall. First and Third grades are looking at how we get facts from photographs and video. There is an expression – “A picture’s worth a thousand words”. We are certainly seeing that as we understand how to glean facts rather than opinions.

Our 2nd, 4th, and 5th graders have a unique opportunity to participate in a new FCPS initiative around Artificial Intelligence and critical thinking. They are getting lessons developed by our central office staff to build their critical thinking and awareness of how AI affects learning and our society. We do NOT have them on AI tools, rather we are building their skills to be robust and savvy users in the future. Please let me know if you have questions – or ask your student!

Happy Reading, Mrs. Jopeck

Community Conversations

Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.

A series of Community Conversations are being held across the school division to discuss current challenges and future opportunities. These events are also a chance for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events are planned for the following dates from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Childcare and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all.
