What's next for the PillPack/Amazon team
The team behind PillPack (and their colleague from Amazon) launched their new startup, General Medicine, about six months ago.
It aims to be a better way for consumers to shop for care online, either with insurance or with cash. And early signs of traction are good, co-founder TJ Parker tells me. Visits have happened in 82% of US counties for a variety of care needs, and the startup has facilitated referrals into 100 different health systems and provider groups. That variety suggests people are using it for more than just hair loss treatment or weight-loss drugs.
I spend a lot of time reporting on the potential and the limitations of online care. A favorite question I’ve been asking lately is: Is the interest in paying directly for GLP-1 medications the exception or the rule?
Parker thinks GLP-1s are just the start of the consumer trend.
"Once you experience similar things in that context, you start to expect that level of experience across your healthcare," Parker said. "We're seeing that people aren't happy in healthcare this way for a whole slew of things. I don't think it's just constrained to weight loss or just constrained to lifestyle conditions."
Next, Parker said the plan is to build tools with the help of AI that can help patients pull together their medical records and act on care they might need (like recognizing if you’re overdue for a mammogram).
