The holidays are perhaps the one time of the year when overindulgence is not only expected but encouraged. Often it feels like the marker of a festive season well spent is fullness, up to the brim: rooms replete with friends and family, and dinner tables laden with food and drink. Fortunate are those who can stuff their bellies and their hearts and want for none.
But fullness isn’t necessarily without discomfort, especially when it comes to food and opportunities to eat a lot – or perhaps too much – of it.
We asked dietician Bryn Beeder of Miami University to explain how the body handles a larger than usual meal – and you can rest assured that your body can indeed handle a day of feasting, often without ill effect to your overall health. And there are ways you can relieve the physical discomfort of digestion.
As for the mental discomfort of overindulgence, Beeder suggests focusing less on the calories and more on the company. “Eat the foods that bring you comfort and connection,” she writes. “You’re nourishing more than just your body.”
