Credit: Reuters | President Trump has announced the death of Sarah Beckstrom, one of the two members of the National Guard shot in Washington DC on Wednesday. The second, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remained in critical condition, Trump said while on a Thanksgiving call with US service members. The suspect in the shooting, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, worked with the CIA in Afghanistan and is said to have come to the US in 2021. Later on Thursday, the president wrote in a two-part Truth Social post that he would "permanently pause migration" to the US from all "third world countries" and "end all federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens". He did not provide details or name which countries might be affected. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Cat became pets way later than thought |
|

Credit: Getty Images | New research suggests that cats' shift from wild hunter to pampered pet happened much more recently than previously thought - and in a different place. A study of bones found at archaeological sites shows cat domestication didn't start at the dawn of agriculture, in the Levant. Instead, it happened a few millennia later, somewhere in northern Africa. |
