From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Angels and the Miraculous
By Mark Mason

Death ends a life, not a relationship.
~Jack Lemmon

On a Thursday evening in late July 2019, I was sitting in a room on an unfamiliar church campus. Around me, men and women of all ages had come together to share their stories, pain, and tears. But, most importantly, they were there to provide comfort to one another. This was a grief support group for bereaved parents.

First-timers were asked to introduce themselves and state their child’s name and when they passed. I drew a deep breath. “My name is Mark Mason, and my daughter’s name is Makenna. Holiday Safety Tips for Your Pets: The holidays are full of joy, sparkle, and celebration — but they can also bring a few unexpected hazards for our furry family members. As you deck the halls, bake the treats, and gather with loved ones, here are a few simple ways to keep your pets safe all season long:

  • Watch the Snacks. Chocolate, xylitol, grapes, raisins, and rich holiday foods can be dangerous for pets. Keep treats out of reach and remind guests not to share table scraps!
  • Secure Your Tree. Make sure your Christmas tree is stable — curious cats and excited pups can turn it into an adventure. Avoid tinsel, which can be harmful if swallowed.
  • Pet-Safe Décor. Some holiday plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly can be toxic. Choose pet-friendly alternatives to keep everyone merry and bright.
  • Mind the Cords & Lights. Twinkly lights look magical, but pets may see them as chew toys. Use cord protectors and keep wires tucked away.
  • Create a Cozy, Quiet Space. Holiday gatherings can be overwhelming. Give your pet a calm spot to relax away from the noise.

Because nothing matters more than the health and happiness of your four-legged family members. From the Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food team.
