Matomo - The accurate ethical web analytics platform
UPDATE
Matomo 5.6.0 is here (and we’re already on 5.6.2). Since our last newsletter, we've released not only one, but three updates, bringing powerful new capabilities to your analytics platform!

Matomo 5.6.0 introduces features that help you understand the changing nature of web traffic:
The new AI Agents tracking feature separates AI-driven visits from real users by detecting requests from agents such as ChatGPT and NovaAct, with more agents coming soon. You get two ready-to-use segments (AI Agents and Human), plus a dedicated dashboard to compare Visit Summary metrics side by side. This is now automatically enabled for new Matomo Cloud and On-Premise instances.

We also bring you smarter privacy controls. Anonymisation settings can now be configured per site and app, moving beyond a single global configuration. Apply stricter rules where needed, relax them where appropriate, and keep every website aligned with its own privacy and compliance requirements.
We've also improved the overall experience with enhancements to the modal system, navbar, Ajax loader design, keyboard navigation, and PHP 8.5 compatibility.

Matomo 5.6.1 and 5.6.2 followed with fixes for archiving issues, theme compatibility, and reporting improvements.

Historical data now available for Cloud customers

Good news for Matomo Cloud users: you now have access to 13 months of historical data for new or edited Segments and Custom Reports.
This means you can create a new segment today and analyse how that audience behaved over the past year, without waiting for data to accumulate.

Why does this matters?
• Analyse trends over a longer time period
• Iterate on segments without losing historical context
• Maintain continuity in reporting and decision-making

Perfect for year-over-year comparisons, seasonal analysis, and understanding long-term trends in your data.

Privacy regulations are evolving: here's what's coming

Important changes are on the horizon for privacy-focused analytics in Europe, and we want to keep you informed.

In France, the CNIL is shifting to a new self-assessment framework that will apply to all analytics tools seeking to rely on consent exemption for web analytics.

At the EU level, the Digital Omnibus initiative was adopted by the European Commission last month. If it passes into law, it is expected to bring significant changes to several privacy and digital services regulations and directives across Europe in 2026 - changes that could have major implications for how organisations handle analytics and user data.

In the UK, changes introduced by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 will amend the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), including permitting consent-exempt website analytics subject to strict conditions.
What this means for you: We're already working closely on these developments. Our team is going through every requirement, preparing detailed guidance, and ensuring Matomo remains the most transparent and compliant analytics solution available.

Our goal is to provide clear and transparent guidance to help you configure Matomo correctly and stay aligned with GDPR expectations.
Look out for our new blog post in early 2026, summarising some key regulatory developments.

As a privacy-first platform, helping you navigate regulatory changes is part of what we do.
We'll continue to share updates, provide clear configuration guidance, and support you through whatever changes come. You're in good hands.
