Chicago Tribune Opinion

Wednesday, December 17, 2025

Good morning.

Grammy-winning artist Chance the Rapper grew up riding the Red Line, and earlier this year, he celebrated his new album “Star Line” by taking over a train. Now, he has partnered with the CTA to voice two new announcements that will be heard on platforms across the city.

Columnist Laura Washington is also a lifelong rider of the CTA but has noticed lately that she is more nervous on transit than before. And there’s a reason for that: Crime on buses, stations and the “L” increased by 6.6% from the yearly average over the three prior years, ABC affiliate WLS-Ch. 7 Chicago reported. The CTA will need more than a fun announcement to make riders feel safe again, Washington writes.

Now for some good Chicago news. An organization building affordable houses on the South and West sides, Reclaiming Chicago, was recently awarded $10 million from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation. This investment “shows what’s possible when private capital, local knowledge and public goals align,” the editorial board writes.

The board calls yesterday’s Finance Committee meeting “a remarkable moment in the history of Chicago government” in its second piece today. Read why at the link below.

Also in commentary, a history professor calls for both parties to end “lawfare,” like what has been used against New York Attorney General Letitia James.

We are inching closer to Christmas, and today, Anthony Pahnke shares what celebrating the Latino Christian holiday, Las Posadas, has meant to him.

Thanks for reading. I hope you do something that makes you feel festive.
