What is Instagram in 2025? That was the first question on our minds when we sat down with Adam Mosseri for this week’s Mixed Signals. Long gone are the days when Instagram was simply a platform to share square-shaped photos with friends. Now, it’s a multimedia commerce and information-sharing platform attempting to redefine itself for the next generation of users. “The mission has been for a long time to inspire creativity that connects people, but how people connect with their friends, how people create, how people entertain themselves has changed a lot,” the head of the platform told us. “So the how changes constantly, and I know that can be a lot sometimes for people who are used to things one way.” Mosseri stopped by the show to talk about a new Reels feed the company launched this week for certain smart TVs, a space where the Instagram head said the platform is still playing catch up. The company’s experiments with bringing Instagram to bigger screens foreshadow the transformation Mosseri sees the platform undergoing as screens themselves change. ″ The form factor goes to a place that looks more like glasses, probably becomes more important than phones,” he explains, asked where he sees Instagram in 10 years. “And then, [being] a visual platform in a medium where you probably want most of your interactions with your smart glasses to be audio-only is a much bigger, more open question.” Mosseri also shared with us his view that humans — not just AI — are responsible for plenty of slop in our feeds, his candid thoughts on TikTok’s “very aggressive” data practices, his take on how a shift to platform agnosticism by creators changes Instagram’s business, and a lot more.
