A festive dog for you! With the week that Donald Trump has had, I’m hearing rumblings in the media about life after Trump. There was a time not too long ago--in fact just a few months-- when I thought (but kept hope) that we would never get out of this, that Trump would manage to end elections and become an autocrat. I thought there would be violence. I was scared for us. As I write this, I find myself nervously repeating in my head the Yogi Berra quote, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” We absolutely have to keep up the pressure. Yogi was right. A piece today in the New Republic writes about the joy of tearing down much of what Trump has done. The writer, Matt Ford, calls it “detrumpification.” I love that. There will be a lot of physical things to be taken down, all the gold trim and Trump’s name in places it shouldn’t be. But there will be a lot of building back up that has to happen, putting back into place many of the helping programs that this country has been known for. Will the next president be sort of like a new Roosevelt? Will there be a version of his New Deal? It’s not clear how many MAGA followers are still devoted to his ideas and to him-- the midterms will give us an idea. In the last election, there was much criticism towards democrats for dismissiveness/condescendion towards this demographic. There is most likely a MAGA faction that are still violently inclined, there may be many who are deeply disillusioned, and others who have just lost interest. Except for the violent people, the next administration needs to keep Trump’s demographic in mind. They are Americans. Trump is aging quickly, we can see it. But I hope he lives long enough to see the end of his term, and be there when he is brought to justice. I’m not vindictive, I just want him to grasp all the wrong he caused. Maybe that’s not something he is capable of, but I want it to bear witness. Have a great rest of your Sunday! Thanks as always for being here, see you tomorrow.
