Back to last week's event: my companion has a huge family, and the dining room table was inadequate for the task, so her husband built a table “topper” and extensions to create room for everyone. I pictured a deranged octopus shaped table with tentacles reaching into other rooms but still one big table.
I came back with the story about one Thanksgiving where the only table big enough to fit our extended family was the ping pong table. Ping pong tables are just slightly too high, so we spent the entire meal sitting up very straight and awkwardly bumping elbows as we tried to reach our water glasses.
The point is, we all want to be at the same table…not banished to the Kid Table.
So, whether you're serving seven fishes or goldfish, whether you're gathered around a handcrafted octopus table or a slightly-too-tall ping pong setup, I hope this season, and the coming year, brings you a seat at a table where you feel seen and get fed. Happy holidays — from our (sometimes improvised) table to yours.
