When actor and chef David Burtka decided to stop drinking almost a decade ago, there weren’t many enticing options for nonalcoholic cocktails that didn’t mimic childish juices or boring seltzers. At around the same time, Burtka’s husband, Neil Patrick Harris, was becoming more interested in mixology.
“The cocktail and the mocktail must coexist!” the two decided. It’s an ethos they have stuck with as frequent hosts — and one that’s extremely adaptable for your own gathering.
Burtka says you don’t need an arsenal of professional gear to create delicious homemade libations or to make your guests feel at home. Little things can make all the difference, like using coupes instead of martini glasses (coupes are less spill-prone and make walking across a room less stressful), or putting out conversation-starter cards to help shy guests join the chatter.
And don’t forget to prep ahead of time. “No one likes a host that’s not there and didn’t even see you all night,” says Burtka, “I want to enjoy my friends.” And they want to enjoy you, too. Have fun out there this week.
