This past November and December, Arlington County's long-term project to reconstruct Columbia Pike met its goal of reaching substantial completion by end of 2025.
What does this project accomplish?
The Columbia Pike Multimodal Project has two broad goals for the corridor.
1) Bury, replace, improve and switch over dry and wet utilities (think cables and pipes) from above ground to below the road.
2) Reconstruct the road, sidewalks, signals and transit infrastructure for safer and improved travel for everyone who uses Columbia Pike no matter how they get around.
What does Substantial Completion mean for Columbia Pike?
This means that all lanes and sidewalks within the County project are open.
(There is a federal project on the east end of Columbia Pike that is operating on a different timeline, but those lanes and the south sidewalk are also open.)
Segments C and D reached Substantial Completion in late 2025.
Is there any work left to do for Final Completion in early 2026?
Yes. In the coming months, crews will be installing and powering the remaining signals at the South Scott Street and South Rolfe Street intersections. Crews will also be performing remaining small tasks and quality assurance work on equipment and concrete on Segments C, D, and A, and the project team will coordinate with utility companies (Verizon, Dominion, Comcast) to remove old equipment and then follow after to fill and patch any holes in the ground. Landscaping teams will also finish planting trees and other greenery in early spring.

Meanwhile, the separate but related Columbia Pike Transit Stations project has been installing shelters for the remaining upgraded bus shelters. After all shelters have been installed, crews will install digital signs, benches and bins, and install community-inspired artwork on the glass roof panels. As service switches over, stay informed with ART Alerts. |
What does this mean for right now?
Columbia Pike is open! Ride an ART bus to explore the completed Transit Stations up close, or see where sidewalks have been widened and leveled for people to walk or roll on safely.

Rail service at Crystal City Metro station will close for 10 weekends between February and June 2026 in service of the Crystal City East Entrance construction project. Service will resume during the week.
Additional rail work by WMATA will also necessitate closures at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metro station.
Shuttles will replace trains between Pentagon City and Potomac Yard during rail closures.

Crews are present on the Mount Vernon Trail near the 14th Street Bridge to remove shrubs and trees ahead of construction for the Long Bridge Project by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA).
Construction activities will require brief, intermittent stoppages (up to 5 minutes) on the Mount Vernon Trail as equipment and construction materials cross. Flaggers will be present at all times to ensure safety of all trail users.
This work is anticipated to be completed by early January, before proceeding into preparing the site for construction.
