A weekly film and box office newsletter. Howdy, folks! Awards season is in full swing after a buzzy Golden Globes weekend, which capped off a flurry of other nominations and awards last week. But a key question, especially after low-rated Oscars telecasts in recent years, is this: has anyone seen these movies? There's a consensus around five films most likely to land Best Picture nominations that each got a substantial theatrical release. Here's where their domestic box office grosses stand:
The widest release of Neon's "Sentimental Value" was 334 theaters in December, and that number has since dwindled. And Focus Features hit nearly 750 theaters for Chloe Zhao's tearjerker "Hamnet" in mid-December before pulling back, although the film just had a fantastic opening in the UK with $4.2 million this past weekend. Both of these films could see theatrical expansions after Oscar nominations are announced next week — "Hamnet" in particular may see a boost after its Globes wins, and given it's in a heated battle for Best Picture with "One Battle After Another." But overall, if the Oscar landscape shapes up as expected, it's a pretty solid slate. "Sinners" was a bona fide box office sensation, and "Marty Supreme" will become A24's highest-grossing movie ever this week. The one to watch, I'd say, is "Hamnet." It's a throwback "Oscar movie" — the kind of well-crafted, spectacularly acted, weepy drama that we all used to see together in theaters in December, catching up on all the biggest contenders. Can Focus convince folks it's better to sob in a dark theater instead of at home when the film is eventually streaming on Peacock? We'll find out soon enough. Adam Chitwood
